Will there be more Princess Planet?
No. But if you enjoyed the series, I’ve made a 12 page pdf, called The Danger of the Dinosorcerer, with a self-contained adventure for Princess Christi and Princess Boo. It’s as pay-what-you-want download (minimum $1 Canadian) of all new material. So, if you want to use it as a tip jar, and give me some money in exchange for the enjoyment you’ve received from the strip, that would be much appreciated. If you just want to buy it to get 72 new panels of Princess Planet, that’s cool too. If you don’t want to pay anything, you’re not missing out on an integral story line or anything.

What else did you do?

THANK YOU!

I want to thank all of the readers who have been involved in making this a fun experience. I really enjoyed the banter we got going. I enjoyed seeing you riddle out the extra gags. I think there was only one troll in the run of the strip. So I want to thank all the commenters, especially those who got into the double digits: Ribuprissin, RavenBlack, ColdFusion, Golux, mdf, Lars, Hoppy, Reynard61, Nonsensicles, Lightbulb, Scarodactyl, Proteus, Alice Quinn, Anonymous, Bok, Anton Sherwood, Blue Night, Daniel, Dante Wynter, Varkarrus, USB, Sam, Kim, The Blonde One, das, littebeast, sirbacon, Emma, Toner, DSil, Aeonsama, Tamfang, Jai, KNO3, Mary Tee, Philosopher Zurg, CatzCradle, and Fat Sweaty. And thanks to everyone who drew Fan Art for the strip: Lars, Daniel, Hambot, and Kathleen! Big up to the people who covered the strip, El Santo at Webcomics Overlook, Alice Quinn at TDot Comics, Hansel Moreno at ReadComicBooks and Jenn at The Dragon podcast. Thank you to the readers who came back to read the strip but didn’t feel the need to comment; the silent majority is much appreciated. A HUGE thank you to everyone who referred a friend and recommended someone else check out the strip. I want to thank my friends and peers for supporting me with encouragement, and guest strips, especially Steven Charles Manale who put up with me calling him for help with punchlines a lot. All the Transmission-X crew. And of course to my amazing wife, who helps me figure out what is funny and what is not. You are all awesome wizaardvark warbarian typhoonicorns!

The Intredpideers

My good buddy Jon McNally turned me onto the retro-D&D inspired comic The Intrepideers by Tim Sievert.  I ordered all 3 books, (one by his friens Brett Von Schlosser and Kelly Krantz) and was overjoyed with all of them. If you are an old-timer like me and enjoy some dungeon crawling danger, you should check them out. They are not all ages, so if you aren’t an old-timer, stick with the Princess Planet, Kukuburi and Charles Christopher. Anyway, I was inspired to make some fan art so here it is:

Patio Drawing

It’s summer and I felt the need to move from studio to patio for a few hours to enjoy the weather. Usually my sketches are more on the realistic side despite my cartoony art style. This time I loosened up a bit and tried to capture more shapes and movement. I even was inspired enough to tighten some of the drawings up and colour them. This is the result (click to enlarge). I was surprised by how many colours I could remember days and days after the sketches were drawn. Only about 30% of the clothing colours are made up.

Koyama Press Logo

Anne Koyama runs a fantastic art/comic book publishing company, Koyama Press. She’s been getting a lot of great artists to redraw her KickAss Annie logo and posting them on their facebook page. I asked to join in the fun and she was game and let me come up with this monsterpiece. Original logo first, my redesgin second (click to enlarge)…

Dr. Sketchy’s He-Man and Skeletor

Life drawing is the best practise for the human figure. In college we had a lot of different sizes and shapes and ages of models. Last night was the first time I’ve had a chance to draw super-hero proportioned guys from life. Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School is a life drawing group with branches all over the world. The idea is to have fun models, fun themes and fun times drawing the human form. The theme last night was He-Man and Skeletor, two of my favourite toy/cartoon characters from when I was a kid in the ’80s. Here’s how some of the sketches turned out. Most of them are drawn from 5 minute poses. The first three are 10 minute poses, the coloured one was coloured during the break and the last two drawings were 1.5 minute warm ups.

Mullwyn

A couple of years ago I noticed that pal and comic book creator Darwyn Cooke looked like Dog the Bounty Hunter’s slimmer brother. But recently I realized he could also be a doppleganger for Michael Mullen, the US Chariman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff…

More Faux Rock Posters

I decided to draw some more posters for band I dig in the style of old comic book covers.

I couldn’t think of anyone to open for Electric Six so I just went with the Electric Light Orchestra because I thought it was kind of funny.

The Get Up Kids is probably my desert island band. If I could only listen to one group forever it would probably be them. They were emo before people made up the term. Earnest rock pop. I think their side projects, Reggie and the Full Effect, Blackpool Lights and The New Amsterdams are also really great.

I always associate Van Halen with my my cooler older cousin and Fast Times at Ridgemount High.

Halloween Costume

I got a fun email a little while ago that said

Hi Brian,

I’m a big fan of The Princess Planet, and webcomics in general. In
fact, my super power is “Webcomic Themed Halloween Costumes That
Nobody Gets.” I usually coordinate them with a more normal costume
worn by somebody else. This year, my daughter (1-1/2 years old) went
to a party dressed as a princess, so of course I went as Bad
Boyfriend. Sadly, nobody got it. I hope you enjoy the attached pic,
and please keep up the great work.

Your fan, #12

Bad Boyfriend hasn’t been around in a while, so click here to remember him. Thanks again to #12 for thinking of The Princess Planet on Halloween and sending the photo over for me to share. He has an adorable princess and some cute ghosts in the house too.

TCAF 2010

The Toronto Comic’s Art Festival lived up to its reputation of putting together some of the best and most passionate small press and webcomic talents together in a fantastic space. The audience was a great mix of young, middle and old, male and female, comics fans and curiousity seekers, robots and astro-goblins. This is the room we made into the TX Comics home. I don’t know if the three girls in black and white stripes were together or if horizontal pin stripes are the new black.

I overheard an equal amount of “Why do I have to be the unicorn?” and “Awesome! I want to be the unicorn!!!”

I drew more hideous caricatures.

Yup, I reused the ol’ lightning teeth gag.

You can click the one below to see it proper sized.

Thanks to everyone who said hi, bought prints or just came out and supported TCAF. This convention was also the launch of the Abominable Charles Christopher book and it looks amazing. If you like super well drawn animal cartoons, you should pick one up. Karl Kerschl put a lot of love into the book.

TCAF – This Weekend!

Me and my TX Comics cronies will be at the Toronto Reference Library for the Toronto Comics Art Festival (TCAF). It is a FREE comic event with lots of great cartoonists and one of the most fun shows I go to. If you’re in the neighbourhood swing by to say hello! I’ll have prints and drawings for sale and be launching my new webcomic. It’s not an all ages comic so I won’t be talking about it here other than to say that. This is a kid friendly zone. If you can’t make it by, you can check out the banner link on the left side of the screen to buy one of the 11 prints I made for your walls. If you’re a fan who shows up, you will get a free quick sketch of your favourite character… if I can still remember how to draw them.

Celebrity Mashups

Moving on from Disney/Marvel mashups I thought I’d do some celebrity ones.

I think this one works for me because, thanks to Nightmare Before Christmas, I can picture Tim Burton making a Sesame Street movie with the Count and other adorable, misunderstood monsters. Blend that with Mars attacks via the Yip-Yip-Yip-Yip aliens and you’ve got a sure fire Burton-esque winner.

I only became familiar with Cory Doctorow last year thanks to Ontario public television’s The Agenda. Since then I’ve enjoyed tracking down his lectures on YouTube and his book of young adult sci-fi Little Brother. It brought back all the excitement I had reading Neuromancer for the first time. If you don’t get the gag, it’s based on Cory’s work with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization that tries to make the internet accessable to all and fix some of the failing copyright laws that don’t allow fair use. Also you need to know Doctor No which was a great book and a solid James Bond movie. Although I think it’s ridiculous that at one point the bad guy, Doctor No, asks James Bond to join his organization and James Bond refuses to betray his queen and country. It makes me think Bond doesn’t know what a spy does. A spy’s response to his enemy saying “I want you to help me with my evil plans” should be “Where do I sign up? Do you want me to know your secret access codes and plans? I’m totally up for that too!”. That parts not in the book. However, in the book Dr. No is killed by being buried alive in bird poop. Seriously.

Could you imagine the money that would be created by the merging of the merchandising power of Star Wars and the Kiss Army? I guess Kiss hasn’t had it’s second wind like Star Wars has, or there would be Kiss Lego video games. Even if they’re getting to old, they should do a reality TV show (Gene Simmons knows how) where they put together a new Kiss band to take their place, like the Dread Pirate Roberts. Kiss: The Next Gerenration would create new Kiss Warriors with different face makeup. Instead of the Demon and Star Child, they’ll be things like the Robot Dinosaur and the Tarantula Dracula.
