Farrah's No Trophy Wife

I’ve never liked award shows. Everybody dresses up nice and believes that if they win they actually won something super important. As if an musician who’s never won a grammy but sells out stadiums and has a loyal group of fans needs another high five to justify their career.

Quite frequently the awards seem fairly arbitrary: Hey, remember all the films you saw in the last 12 months. Only the new ones. Rate it on a scale from “the best” to “the rest of them”. But it can’t be a comedy because comedies aren’t important. And they’re way easier to act. Also, best gaffer. And best best boy. And best special effects, which if they did their job, you didn’t even notice them because they didn’t draw attention to the fact they were effects. etc. etc.

But I can see there is a point to awards. They draw some attention to pieces of work that may not otherwise get attention. Like “I feel like I should buy a kid’s book but there are so many to choose from. This one won a Silver Birch award. Maybe I’ll try it?” as opposed to “I don’t know where to start. I’ll just get the one with Batman. I recognize that guy. It’s probably tolerable.”

Yeah… well what I wonder about is why are only some awards ceremonies followed by the public? I mean, people get all crazy about the Oscars or… Uh… those other ones… Gra/Emmys…
But why aren’t there, like, firemen awards? Or I don’t know, sanitation engineer awards? TEACHER AWARDS. I would like to know who is the best teacher. Why aren’t graphic novel type awards published more? And how often are Nobel Prizes given out??

I think Awards are nice though… I bet it’s really nice to have some sort of validation of your success, even if it only represents a few influential people’s opinions. But then I’ve never really won a contest or an award or anything.

…Sorry. Anyway Farrah is an interesting character. She keeps you on your toes!

Wow, this one is pretty snarky for you. I don’t like award shoes either.

Thanks Ribuprissin! I fixed it. I also coloured in a stone in the wall I missed. Now it’s perfect!

Mary Tee, I think the only way we’re going to get teacher’s awards and fireman awards getting bigger press is if the red carpet dress industry invents these events to make money the same way greeting card companies invented things like Secretaries Day and Mother’s Day and condolences. 😛

Bryan, I see your point. When I read/wrote the mirror his tone is not snarky, just goofily incredulous but that doesn’t ensure everyone else will read it the same way. Fail!

Hmmm… but then I feel like they should already have done it! 😀

  6. KNO3

KNO3 awards Mary Tree the “KNO3 Best Sanitation Engineer Award in the Universe!” award.

There. See how easy it is.
